“As an active drummer and percussionist over the past 25 years, I became increasingly focused on a physical dialog between situation and material, often bypassing standard approaches to percussion and considering the space in which that sound is presented in order to create a larger experience for those listening. My recordings have been featured in a variety of contexts, from cassette tape to MTV, and I’ve performed concerts throughout the U.S., Japan, and Europe. I have worked with members of the groups Swans, Wilco, Bon Iver, and Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio, as well as being a longtime member of the group Collections of Colonies of Bees, and more recently, Volcano Choir. I’ve also collaborated with artists such as James Plotkin, Marcus Schmickler, Dan Burke, Asmus Tietchens, Lionel Marchetti, Z’EV, Jason Kahn, Jack Wright, and many others. My complete recording discography can be viewed here. I was artist-in-residence in Nijmegen, Netherlandsas part of the Brombron project, talked about my work at Weslyan University, composed music for film screenings, and held workshops for people about how to think differently about listening.”

Travis Johns (San Fransisco, CA) A composer and sound artist from San Francisco, Ca. Using a combination of processed field recordings, sine wave oscillators and analog electronics, he attempts to weave textural tapestries of gestures, thoughts and experiences into a singular mass of infinite sonic possibilities. Most recently, his work has concerned itself primarily with two notions – namely that of the desolation and excess of human industry, as well as the mysteries and intrigue of the subconscious mind, often sounding something like the distant swarming of well oiled mechanical bees woven with fissures of dark tones and noise rips.
Rafael Toral is researching performance in “post-free jazz electronic music”. Using custom, experimental electronic instruments, he’s developing the long-term Space Program to structure musical phrasing in electronics. Approaching jazz as a system of individual decision-making from the viewpoint of electronics, his conception deals with physical performance, “phrasing and swing”, instruments with sonic identity, and articulation of silence and sound.
Formerly known for his drone/ ambient work with guitar and electronics and acclaimed records such as Wave Field (1994) or Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance (2000), in 2003 he decided to completely renew his approach to music, launching the Space Program in 2004.
In 2006 he released Space, followed by Space Solo 1 in 2007 and Space Elements Vol. I in 2008. Also in 2008 premiered the Space Collective, a slowly developing orchestral group.
He has also released a handful of records on the local label TAIGA Records.
